Richard M. Schwartzstein

Richard M. Schwartzstein, a 1979 graduate of Harvard Medical School (HMS), is Chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), where he developed a clinical and research program to enhance our understanding of and care for patients with dyspnea. His research has focused on the basic physiology of dyspnea and its relationship to respiratory sensations. Rich has a strong interest in medical education and is the Ellen and Melvin Gordon Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Medical Education at Harvard. He was Director of the HMS Academy for nine years and the inaugural Director of Educational Scholarship. He also directs the Carl J. Shapiro Institute for Education and Research at HMS and BIDMC. He has taught physiology at HMS for more than 25 years and chaired the Steering Committee that developed the Pathways curriculum initiated at the medical school in 2015. He has received numerous national and Harvard Medical School teaching awards.
